The Patagucci Institute for the Advancement of Humankind has a core mission to recognize a student’s interior life and by doing so, help them integrate their present circumstances with their hopes and dreams. It was within the framework of my educational therapy practice that I began to develop the Certificates of Harmonious Development. Over the past decades I realized that one way for every student to transform was through a precise acknowledgement of their core traits.
In all therapy, one investigates the label—the deficit and the gap between one’s effort and outcomes. Between ego and identity. Between trauma and anxiety. It’s here where virtues emerge and develop. It’s here where therapists listen and assist. It’s within the frame of the 1:1 where struggle is dissected and re-imagined, so that its productive and positive. Every struggle is the proverbial sand in the oyster, polishing the great pearl of human life.
One’s narrative is an important variable in understanding and development of themselves, their identity and ego. The Certificates of Harmonious Development are a way to align the significant effort of students everywhere—when we find solitude and harmony within ourselves, we can do anything.
Here is a bit of my story...The Boy with Four Names
Our library organizes forty eight virtues along an positive executive function model. You can use the words to acknowledge growth and affirm change in your child, a co-worker or a student. Harmonious Development is the idea that effort produces change in individuals. Outcomes do matter, yet they are not the complete picture. Certificates of Harmonious Development recognize the internal outcome of effort. They signify that you recognize something of great value in the recipient. To students who struggle, or coworkers who strive or students who study hard, words matter. As people seek to master tasks at hand, there is something of great value - greater than accomplishing a goal, that occurs.
What matters is that others understand the nature of their effort, the unseen aspects of self actualization and efficacy. The purpose of Certificates of Harmonious Development are to acknowledge the recipients for their inner accomplishments.
